Govt of Punjab Increases Subsidy on Lahore’s Public Transport

As per a media report, the government provides over Rs. 18 billion worth of subsidies to the transport sector across the province on a yearly basis, of which Rs. 13.91 billion worth of subsidies are allotted for the repairs and maintenance of vehicles.

The report further mentioned that over Rs. 8.8 hundred million in subsidies are given to the public transport sector each year as security, and that Rs. 1.79 billion in subsidies is provided to the public transport sector for the service of automatic fares.

A few days ago, the Government of the Punjab, in a meeting of the provincial cabinet’s sub-committee in Lahore, decided to take old and dilapidated public transport vehicles off the roads of the province. Lawmakers stated that this decision will reduce the local air pollution levels and will benefit the health of the public.

As per the details of the report, all the public transport vehicles that have traveled over 100,000 kilometers will be taken off the roads.

Consequently, the provincial government has directed the provincial excise department to revoke the registration of all such vehicles and to immediately impound them.
